Today is World Wetlands Day! What is World Wetlands Day?? In 1971 the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was adopted on February 2nd. Since then February 2nd of each year is known as World Wetlands Day! This day is set aside to raise global awareness about the value of wetlands for humans and the planet!
The theme for 2017 is Disaster Risk Reduction. This theme seems odd for wetlands that are usually revered for their ecological significance? Wetlands play an important role in reducing the impact of extreme weather events. These events including flooding, droughts, cyclones and more! During hydro-logic events wetlands act as natural sponges that help absorb excess rainfall and reduce flooding during extreme weather events. During dry periods wetlands can release stored water and will also help delay the onset of droughts, even reducing the risk of water shortages!
WOW! Wetlands are not just home to unique ecological systems! They are so much more!
